The Classic Stromboli

As an Italian girl, there is something about classic Italian dishes that I found so delicious and comforting. And anything wrapped in pizza dough is going to be an instant favorite as well. I like to think of a Stromboli as an inside out pizza. It’s warm, filled with sauce and gooey cheese, and the added toppings like pepperoni and olives just make it the perfect dinner. Especially as the nights start to get chillier, keep your house warm and smelling like a pizzeria with this classic dish.

Pizza dough (can use a store bought dough ball):

  • 3 cups bread flour
  • 1 envelope instant dry yeast
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 2 tsp salt
  • 1 1/2 cup warm water
  • 2 tbsp olive oil

Toppings (per stromboli):

  • 1/3 cup sauce
  • 1/3 cup grated mozzarella
  • 1/4 cup chopped olives
  • 1/4 cup sliced pepperoni

  1. Combine dry dough ingredients in mixer and slowly add in in water and olive oil until dough becomes sticky and workable
  2. Work dough into a ball form, let rest 1 hour covered
  3. Divide dough ball into three equal parts and roll dough out into three circular shapes
  4. Fill the middles with pizza sauce
  5. Cover with toppings and cheese
  6. Roll the dough over to form a small cylinder shaped log
  7. Cut three or four small slits in the top
  8. Place in the oven and bake at 400º for 15-20 minutes or until dough is golden brown on all sides
